SUGAR GROVE HISTORY
( circa 1817)
Originally purchased by Claiborne Dandridge West, from
Buckingham County, Virginia. By the year 1814 he had
accumulated more than 30,000 acres of choice Christian County,
Kentucky land for himself, relatives, and friends. This
property today would cover a large part of South Christian
County, Kentucky, and a part of present Trigg County,
Kentucky. At the time of his death in 1822 he still owned
almost four thousand acres.
He named his plantation “SUGAR GROVE” and began the building
of his home on the very site of the present dwelling of Howard
and Glenda Jacobs . His death occurred before he had
completed it in it’s entirety. Therefore it was completed by
Mrs. West’s next husband, Ambrose Davie, who refused to
complete it as originally planned by Mr. West. ( See pictures
and floor plans in history record) The West/Davie house was
torn down between 1952 & 1953 with parts of it moved to
Lookout Mountain , Tennessee. An 1878 map of Christian
County clearly marks the place still as “Sugar Grove” . The
remaining acreage of Sugar Grove was purchased in 1990 by the
Jacobs family.
The Carriage House is a one
and a half story Gambrel style barn that has the additional
charm of large colorful antique cathedral stained glass
windows. The open rafters welcome your special lighting
treatments and the three 8 to 10 foot door openings let in the
spectacular view of the farm and overlooking surrounding farm
fields and horse pastures. The large open grassy lawn may be
tented in case additional covered space is needed. Along with
the Carriage house, we offer the option of using the Pergola
Garden grounds with outdoor fireplace, the Tiny Garden Guest
House, walking trails around the farm, horse and carriage
rides, (and just maybe a tractor or combine ride if you are
lucky.) Also the home residence may be available for small
formal luncheons or tea’s.
